Задания конкурса:
1. This work of the famous designer Christopher Wren stands
at the junction of Monument Street and Fish Street Hill. It was built between
1671 - 1677 to commemorate the Great Fire of London of 1666 and to celebrate
the rebuilding of the city.
2. This monument was the Russian Space Agency’s gift to the United Kingdom and
at first it was temporarily installed near the British Council headquarters on
The Mall in 2011. Later on, in 2013, it was moved from The Mall to the Royal Observatory
in Greenwich.
3. This monument is a war memorial, where great number of people gather to
observe the two-minute silence and to perform the annual Remembrance Day.
4. This London
museum is one of most famous in the world. Visitors can see a lot of art
objects from different epochs and different countries of the world. One of the
exhibits is the Rosetta Stone, 195 BC, which has the texts, that gave
scientists the keys to understand Egyptian hieroglyphics.
5. This majestic
building in the late Gothic style is officially known as the New Palace of
Westminster. It stands on the site of the old royal Palace of Westminster,
founded in the 11th century. This building was designed by Sir Charles
Barry and built between 1837-1888.
6. This great
important building is associated with British history. It has been the place of
coronation from William the Conqueror in 1066 to Elizabeth II in 1953. It is
also the place of the final resting for a lot of monarchs and great people of
the country.
7. This massive
triumphal building was designed by Aston Webb and built in 1910 as part of a
national memorial to Queen Victoria.
8. This unique
monument to Queen Victoria’s husband was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott
(1872). It stands not far from the Royal Palace of Kensington and attracts a
lot of tourists with its originality and beauty.
9. This 18m high
rose-pink granite obelisk was erected in 1475 B. C. far from Britain, but in
1819 it was given to the country and installed at its present site, on the bank
of the Thames in 1878.
10. This famous department store was founded in 1707 by
two businessmen. Their effigies are seen slowly emerging next to the clock
above the entrance to the store after the hourly chimes. It is situated in
Piccadilly.
11. This tea clipper was launched in 1869. It was the
greatest and fastest one of her time. In 1885 she sailed from Australia to
England in just 73 days. Tourists can see her in Greenwich now.
12. This principal courts in the country for hearing civil
cases and for criminal and civil appeals occupy an impressive Gothic building.
When the courts sit, the public may be admitted to the galleries.
13. This masterpiece by James Gibbs (1722-1726), a
beautiful example of baroque architecture, replaced a royal parish church
erected for Henry VIII in 1544. Now it is a popular lunchtime and evening
concert venue. It is situated close to Trafalgar square.
14. This one of the most beautiful royal parks occupies 58
acres and dates back to the 16th century. Later
(1829) John Nash created the lake which is now full of ducks, pelicans and
geese. You can see London residence of the Queen from it.
15. It is the most popular square in London with some
monuments, fountains and statues. Here there is the National Gallery with more
than 2.000 artworks, including Titian, Turner, Monet and Vermeer.
16. It is the Queen’s official residence with 775 rooms.
It has served as the official London residence of Britain’s sovereigns since
1837.
17. It is one of the most beautiful palaces of England,
built in the early 16th century. It was a residence of Henry VIII with a lot
of halls and apartments. Near the palace there are magnificent gardens and a
park.
18. This famous London landmark is a part of
telecommunications system. On competition in 1965, it was the tallest structure
in central London (189 m). Unfortunately, it doesn’t open to the public.
19. This modern unusual structure is situated at
Paddington Basin. It was conceived by British designer Thomas Heatherwick,
designed by Anthony Hunt with Packman Lucas, and built by Littlehampton Welding
Ltd. in 2004. In 2005 the construction won the British Structural Steel Design
Award.
20. This English galleon is best
known for her circumnavigation of the globe between 1577 and 1580, captained by Sir Francis Drake. She was originally known as Pelican, but was renamed by Drake in 1578 to compliment his
patron, who was one of the principal sponsors of Drake's world voyage. Since1996 her replica has been
berthed at St Mary Overie Dock on Cathedral Street in London. It works as a museum.
